This is the Mother Earth, the daughter of the forest and a guardian of natural places. She swirls the vitality of precious natural places around her, including the small creatures that live with in her garment. She is you and me, and our connection to these precious places and creatures. We humans need to be the guardians and caretakers. Although on the whole humans are not very good at this, with so many of our smaller, less seen creatures disappearing, killed from fear or poisoned in our industrial world. However they are essential to how the whole of the natural cycle plays out. As humans we want to control life, to make it feel safe and to get rid of all discomfort. But is this wise?
The garment is made from moulded forest and garden surfaces combined with some modeled creatures hidden amongst leaves and natural textures. This is then cast into bronze. The sculpture merges the natural wildness with the human form. There is an element of chance and change – through the process – I have less control of outcome. I have to relinquish control and allow the process to happen. Allow for some ‘wildness’ in the creative process.
